Des Moines, Iowa – The CMU Men's Basketball team opened the new year with an 83-73 setback against Grand View University on the road.
With the loss, the Eagles move to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while the Vikings improve to 10-5 on the season and 5-3 in conference action.
The opening half was tightly contested, as both teams traded baskets throughout the first 20 minutes. CMU built its largest lead of the half at five points midway through the period, but Grand View closed strong to take a one-point advantage into halftime.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the second half, with neither team able to create much separation. However, the Vikings caught fire late, using a decisive offensive run to push their lead to 79–65 with 2:34 remaining. The Eagles were unable to close the gap down the stretch as Grand View secured the 10-point victory.
Tommie Williams led CMU offensively, pouring in 22 points on an efficient nine-of-12 shooting performance. The senior from East St. Louis also contributed seven rebounds, along with a steal and a block.
Isaiah Reams added 17 points, shooting seven-of-12 from the floor, while also tallying three assists and a steal. Tyson Oghene rounded out the Eagles in double figures with 13 points.
As a team, CMU shot an impressive 56 percent from the field, edging Grand View's 50.9 percent. The difference came from beyond the arc, where the Vikings outshot the Eagles 42.9 percent to 30.8 percent.
CMU returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when the Eagles host William Woods University inside Puckett Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
