Central Survives Double OT Thriller Against Benedictine

Central Survives Double OT Thriller Against Benedictine

Atchison, Kan. - The Central Methodist Men's Basketball program avenged an earlier season loss to Benedictine College Wednesday evening in Atchison, Kansas.

Central defeated the Ravens in a double overtime thriller, 92-88, splitting the season series between the two programs.

The Eagles now stand at 11-9 and 8-8 in the Heart of America. BC drops to 8-11 and 5-8 in conference play.

Central overcame a slow first half that saw them trailing 17-5 after the first four minutes of game action. CMU battled back and trimmed the deficit to single digits. The Eagles trailed 42-34 at the halftime break.

Central ultimately pulled out in front with a jumper from Marcus Anthony at the 14:02 mark of the second. CMU stretched their lead to as many as seven over the next three minutes of play.

However, Benedictine remained within striking distance and eventually tied the game at 60-60 just under seven minutes.

Both teams exchanged baskets over the final minutes, with Benedictine pulling out in front, 74-69 with 17 seconds left in regulation.

A three-pointer from Brandon Tchouya cut the lead to two. BC would go to the charity stripe on the next possession and converted one-of-two free throws, allowing Central to stay within reach of tying the game.

Anthony converted another basket with 10 seconds left. CMU would foul once again, with Benedictine, again, converting one-of-two free throws.

Trailing by two at 76-74, Anthony drove the length of the floor and hit a baseline jumper with under two seconds left to the send the game into overtime.

One overtime was not enough to determine a winner, as both sides remained deadlocked at 84-84. Central opened the second overtime period with four straight points to go out in front 88-84.

Benedictine stopped CMU's run with a basket at the 2:35 mark of the period. Destin Jenkins stretched the Eagles' lead back out four before another basket by BC put the lead at 90-88 for Central.

A key offensive rebound for CMU resulted in Benedictine having to foul with 18 seconds left.

Jenkins converted both of his free throw attempts and gave Central its four point advantage once again.

Benedictine's offense came up empty on its final possession, as the Eagles escaped with a 92-88 win.

Jenkins had one of his best scoring outputs of the season, leading Central's offense with 24 points on eight-of-15 shooting from the floor and seven-of-10 from the charity stripe.

He secured a double-double with 12 rebounds while also adding five assists and a steal to his stat line.

Bol Tong joined Jenkins with 20 plus points, as the senior from Kansas City scored 21 points which included four three-point baskets. Additionally, Tong grabbed eight rebounds and finished the night with three blocks.

Anthony reached 20 plus points for the third straight game, scoring 20 points, which included several key baskets to keep Central in the game. Anthony dished out a team-best seven assists and was a pest on the defensive side of the ball, collecting four steals.

Tchouya was the final Eagle to land in double figures with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.

The difference in the game came from the charity stripe, as Central converted 65.4 percent of its free throw attempts, compared to just 54.5 percent for Benedictine.

BC held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding CMU 49-44.

CMU returns home to host Clarke University Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
