Eagles Fend Off Owls to Improve to 3-0

Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Men's Basketball program improved to 3-0 in non-conference action with an 87-81 victory over William Woods University Monday night inside Puckett Field House.

Leading 79-75 with a little over three minutes remaining in the second half, baskets from Evens Appolon and Isaiah May stretched Central's lead to eight. The Owls responded with a 5-0 scoring run with less than 30 seconds left to pull within three.

But the Eagles converted four-straight free throws in the closing seconds to solidify the six point victory.

Junior guard TreVon Smith finished the night with a team-best 28 points on seven-of-17 shooting from the floor in addition to converting 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe, highlighted by clutch free throws in the closing moments.

Trey Sinegal was the second Eagle to land in double figures with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Junior guard Everett Stubblefield added 13 points in 28 minutes of action, while Trent Lyles rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points coming off the bench.

Despite being outrebounded by the Owls, 50-44, Central converted 78.9-percent of its attempts from the charity stripe. William Woods knocked down just 56.7-percent of its attempts from the free throw line, which would prove to be the difference maker coming down the stretch.

CMU got solid production from the bench, as the Eagles' substitutes scored 41 points compared to 32 for William Woods.

Central will remain at home to Columbia College Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
