Olathe, Kan. - The Central Methodist men's basketball program fell in the closing moments to MidAmerica Nazarene University by a score of 64-61 Wednesday night in Olathe, Kan.
The Eagles now fall to 14-5 and 5-3 in conference play, while the Pioneers improve to 9-8 and 4-3 the Heart.
Trailing by five with less than six minutes remaining, Central scored the next two baskets to trim the deficit to 62-61. With 47 seconds left on their final possession, the Pioneers were able to grab an offensive rebound and run the clock down to six seconds.
MNU then converted a two-point basket to take a 64-61 lead. Central had an opportunity to tie the game at the buzzer, but were unable to convert the last second three as the clock expired.
Freshman guard Marcus Anthony scored a new career-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. He also added eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 28 minutes of action.
Jonathan Brown was the only other Eagle to land in double figures with 14 points including two three-point baskets. Dwayne McClendon recorded seven points off the bench, while Trent Lyles added six and Charlie Bronakowski five.
MidAmerica finished the evening shooting an even 50-percent from the floor compared to 41.3-percent for the Eagles. The Pioneers just edged Central on the glass with 35 rebounds, while CMU recorded 33. The Eagles made just eight trips to the free throw line, knocking down five of their eight attempts.
Central concludes its two-game road trip against Mount Mercy on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 4:00 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
