BECKLEY, W.Va. — Despite holding a halftime lead, the Central Methodist men's basketball team couldn't quite hold on, dropping a tight overtime contest to West Virginia Tech, 106-102.
Central Methodist traveled over 700 miles to face WVU Tech, the No. 11 ranked team in NAIA Division II Men's Basketball.
The Eagles led 47-43 after 20 minutes, but trailed late in the second half. A three-point play by Isaiah Thurmond cut the deficit to one, and Josh Robinson (JR/Normal, Ill.) nailed a free-throw with three seconds left in regulation to tie the game, 91-91.
In overtime, WVU Tech salted the game away with clutch shooting from Elisha Boone, who scored eight points in the extra frame.
Robinson led Central Methodist with 24 points, including 17 in the first half. He also recorded six assists.
Christian Soderholm (JR/Peru, Ill.) was another Eagle standout, scoring 22 points and snagging 14 rebounds. Both Soderholm and Robinson went 3-4 from three-point land, leading a Central Methodist attack that 54% from deep for the game.
Thurmond had 16 points, while Cameron Tutt (SR/Owensboro, Ky.) and Terrance Bush (SR/Des Moines, Iowa) had 14 and 11 points, respectively. Erick Locke (SR/Oak Park, Ill.) scored seven points and led the Eagles with eight assists.
As a team, Central Methodist shot 51% from the field, and 62.5% from the line.
The next game for the Eagles won't be until the new year, when Central Methodist is set to take on Clarke on Jan. 2 at 7:30 pm.
