Cook's Late Three Gives Central Road Win Over Wildcats

Cook's Late Three Gives Central Road Win Over Wildcats

Baldwin City, Kan. - Behind a late three from junior guard Zutorya Cook, the Central Methodist Women's Basketball team escaped with a 50-47 win over the Baker Wildcats Wednesday night in Baldwin City, Kansas.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-11 and 7-10 in the Heart of America, while Baker drops to 3-19 and 3-15 in conference play.

Central struggled early, trailing by as many as nine points at the 2:52 mark of the second quarter. The Eagles would find themselves down 29-22 at halftime.

CMU outscored the Wildcats 14-11 in the third quarter to come within four entering the final frame. Central's defense was on lock in the fourth, holding BU to just seven points. Altogether, the game featured four ties and 10 lead changes, with a majority of the action coming in the fourth quarter.

With 32 seconds left, Baker converted a free throw to tie the game at 47-47. Central had the opportunity to go ahead with a basket. With the clock winding down under 10 seconds, Cook dribbled to the left side of the floor and drained a three with five seconds remaining to put CMU ahead.

Coming out of a timeout, Baker's game-tying three on their final possession fell short, solidifying Central's 50-47.

Cook led all scorers with 22 points which included three three-point baskets. She also recorded five steals and added a block to her stat line. Sa'Mya Stevens and Tynesha Parnell finished the evening with six points, while Stevens grabbed six rebounds.

Miaya Ware scored five points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the win. Sharay Trotter stuffed the stat sheet with eight rebounds, five points, three assists, and three steals.

Despite struggling offensively, the Eagles held Baker to just 28.6 shooting from the floor and forced 17 Wildcat turnovers on 11 steals. BU held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding CMU 45-36.

Central holds a steady presence in the middle of the pack of the Heart regular season standings. The Eagles remain on the road where they will face Peru State College on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Peru, Nebraska.
