No. 2 Eagles Earn Close Road Win over Grand View

Des Moines, Iowa - The No. 2 Central Methodist Women's Basketball team survived a road scare at (RV) Grand View University by a score of 69-60 Wednesday night in Des Moines, Iowa.

With the win, the Eagles keep their perfect record intact at 22-0 and 16-0, while the Vikings fall to 18-5 and 14-3 in conference action.

After jumping out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, the Eagles held a 35-27 advantage at the halftime break. Grand View cranked up the pressure in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 23-16 to tie the game at 51-51 entering the fourth.

CMU held the Vikings to just nine points in the final frame, which included just two made field goals.

Central had a balanced attack from its starting five, as each member landed in double figures. Leah Johnson led the way with 18 points on six-of-eight shooting from the floor in just 20 minutes of action. She also added 11 rebounds to secure another double-double.

Leianya Massenat added 17 points to go along with five steals. Jaicia Canady followed with 13 points while Daryna Bachkarova and Zutorya Cook each chipped in 10.

Central finished the night shooting 44.6 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Grand View converted on just 29.9 percent of its field goal attempts and just 16.7 percent from three.

CMU won the battle of the boards with 37 rebounds compared to 30 for the Vikings.

The Eagles remain on the road for a huge showdown against No. 8 Clarke Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa. Central won the earlier matchup between the two teams 71-64 back on Nov. 26 in Fayette.
