Springfield, Mo. - Behind three-double digit scoring performances, the No. 2 Central Methodist Women's Basketball team held off the Evangel Valor to earn a 70-60 road victory in Springfield, Mo.
The Eagles improve their overall record to 17-0 and 11-0 in conference play. The Valor fall to 7-10 and 6-6 in the Heart.
CMU opened up the first quarter with a 25-10 advantage before outscoring the Valor 21-17 in the second, taking a 46-27 lead into the halftime break.
Evangel held Central to single digits in the third, outscoring the Eagles 16-9. EU won the battle in the fourth 17-15 and trimmed the lead to as few as nine points. However, CMU would make eight straight free throws down the stretch to solidify the victory.
Daryna Bachkarova led Central's offense with 17 points in 32 minutes of action. Robin Beck saw significant action off the bench, scoring 14 points on 50-percent shooting from the floor. Five of her 10 field goal makes came from beyond the arc.
Zutorya Cook rounded out the double-digit scorers for CMU with 12 points. The duo of Leianya Massenat and Taliyah Carter each chipped in nine points, while Massenat nearly secured a double double with a game-high 10 rebounds. She also added six assists and three steals.
Jaicia Canady had another efficient night, collecting six rebounds and adding five assists, five steals and a block.
As a team, the Eagles shot an even 50-percent from the floor and 33.3-percent from the three-point line. EU finished the evening shooting 34.2-percent from the field, 27.3-percent from three, and 41.7-percent from the charity stripe.
Central returns home to host MidAmerica Nazarene University Thursday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. inside Puckett Field House for alumni night.
The Eagles won the earlier matchup between the two teams, 79-74, back on Nov. 30 in Olathe. It remains Central's closest victory of the season so far.
