Lawrence, Kan. - Behind two twenty-point scoring performances, the No. 11 Central Methodist women's basketball team defeated Haskell Indian Nations University, 77-58 Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kan.
With the win, the Eagles improve their overall record to 7-0, while Haskell falls to 4-8. It marks the program's first 7-0 start since the 2012-13 season.
Haskell outpaced Central in the first two quarters of play, leading by three points at the end of the first, and a five-point lead at halftime.
However, Central responded in the third, outscoring Haskel 21-17 to cut the deficit to just one at the end of the quarter. The Eagles' offense took charge in the final quarter, outscoring HINU 27-7 to come away with a 19-point victory.
Reigning Heart Player of the Week Daryna Bachkarova poured in 26 points, tying her career-high. She also pulled down seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action.
Arleighshya McElroy tallied 21 points along with 10 rebounds, good enough to earn a double-double. The native of Dallas, Texas also recorded three assists and a block.
Sophomore guard Jaicia Canady was the final Eagle to reach double figures, as she collected 13 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe.
CMU won the battle of the boards by double-digits, grabbing 51 rebounds compared to 41 for Haskell. McElroy and Leianya Massenat led the rebounding efforts with 10 boards each. Freshman Leah Johnson also grabbed nine rebounds and scored seven points.
Central's defense forced 21 turnovers on 11 steals, and held HINU to just 30.9-percent shooting from the field and 15-percent from the three-point line.
CMU returns home to host Midland University in another non-conference matchup Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
