ATCHIISON, Kan. – A four-game win streak was snapped for the No. 23 Central Methodist University women's basketball team in an overtime thriller at (RV) Benedictine College on Thursday evening.
It looked like a win was in sight after three-pointer from Shannon Mitchell (SR/Seligman, Mo.) put the Eagles (15-7, 11-5 Heart) ahead by five with 90 minutes to play. The Ravens responded with back-to-back three's over the next minute of play to take a one-point lead, sealing the contest with a one-for-two showing at the free throw line and handing CMU a 67-65 loss.
As a team, Central Methodist went 35.4 percent from the field and an efficient 12-for-15 from the charity stripe. The team forced 23 turnovers and collected 12 steals, but were out-rebounded at a 44-38 margin.
Crimson Jones (JR/Flora, Ill.) led the squad in scoring with 14 points and nabbed five rebounds. Cierra Stanciel (SR/Chicago, Ill.) came off of the bench to tack on 12 points, after going 5-for-6 from the field, followed by Mitchell who rounded out the top scorers with 10 points while. Stanciel led the team defensive attack with three steals while Lajanea Kimbrough (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) led on the glass with seven rebounds.
Up next for Central Methodist will host Grand View on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 2 pm in Puckett Field House.
