SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Morgan Vetter pumped in a game-high 22 points as Central Methodist shot 56.3 percent from the floor Thursday in a 76-59 win at Evangel (Mo.) in the Ashcroft Center. The Eagles win their second-straight Heart of America Athletic Conference game.
Central Methodist (14-11, 5-10) broke an 11-all tie with a 10-0 run in a four-minute span midway through the first half, highlighted by two Vetter treys. A Sammie Jo Copeland basket gave the Eagles a 21-11 edge.
Avila (5-18, 4-11), already trailing 30-19, was outscored 10-2 in the final 3:08 of the first half. Vetter connencted on her fourth 3 of the period with 40 seconds on the clock to give the Eagles a 40-21 lead at intermission.�
The Crusaders shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from distance in the second half after going 0-of-4 in the first but were never able to crack any closer than 13 points of coach James Arnold's squad. Central Methodist led by 23 points three times in the first five minutes of the second period en route to the 17-point triumph.
Vetter finished 5-of-11 from distance and 7-of-7 from the free throw line to go along with three assists and two steals. Copeland added 11 points on a 5-of-6 effort from the floor, while Jesse Ellis and Taylor Cornelison each scored 10. Ellis also had eight rebounds and three assists, while Cornelison recorded three of the team's five blocks. Chelsea Pannier dished out a game-high six assists and pulled down as many rebounds.�Copeland and Cornelison each pulled down four rebounds.�
The Eagles shot better than 55 percent in each half.
Amanda Landolt led Evangel with 16 points. Allison Swanson and Reggine Brown each scored 13 points and six rebounds, while Jessica Lessman tallied 11 points.
Central Methodist returns to Puckett Field House on Saturday to host No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at 2 p.m. CT.
