Nyakundi gives WBB win over Culver-Stockton

FAYETTE, Mo. - Ashley Nyakundi's bucket in the paint with 11.2 seconds left in the game lifted Central Methodist over Culver-Stockton, 63-62, on Thursday inside Puckett Fieldhouse. The win gives the Eagles' (16-12, 12-5 Heart of America Athletic) two in a row after defeating the Wildcats (14-15, 6-11 HAAC).

"In the first half, we were the aggressor. We were able to get baskets in the paint which led to some nice looks on the outside, and we dominated the offensive glass," Central Methodist Head Coach James Arnold said."In the second half, they (Culver-Stockton) were much more aggressive at getting inside, and we gave up way too many second chance points. Fortunately the ladies found a way in the last two minutes to just enough to pick up the win."

Thursday's victory marked the final home regular season game for six seniors: Sami Dunger, Karli Abbey, Sarah Foster, Catherine Kyle, Alexa Fox and Natalye Horne. Central Methodist will host at least one game in the upcoming conference tournament.

Raylyn Nuss scored a team-high 15 points for the Eagles. She drilled five baskets in the game, including four from behind the arc. Kyle and Catherine Williams had 10 apiece. Nyakundi, Towanda Sutton and Sammie Gathercoleall added six off the bench.

Sutton totaled 10 rebounds. Abbey had nine.

Culver-Stockton led 62-61 with 23 seconds remaining and had an opportunity to take a three-point edge, but two missed free throws set the stage for Nyakundi's heroics.

"On the final play, we were looking for two options, Ashley inside and a shooter coming to the top," Arnold said."They collapsed on Ashley initially, but Brittany (Lloyd) did a really nice job of being patient and made a nice pass, and Ashley finished the tough basket to clinch the win."

Jessie Logsdon finished with a game-high 21 points for Culver-Stockton. Aneshia Starks (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Tromesa May (13 points, 10 rebounds) both posted double-double efforts.

The Eagles shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three-point range. The Wildcats were 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor but only 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from distance.

Central Methodist travels to Baker on Saturday for the final game of the regular season. TIpoff is set for2 p.m.
