Fayette, Mo. - Stephen Main announced his resignation as the Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach of Central Methodist University.
"We thank Coach Main for his influence with the Men's and Women's Golf programs as well as our Women's Soccer program," stated Director of Athletics Jeff Sherman.
"He has been instrumental in promoting and building the Emerging Sports programs here at CMU over the past three years. Stephen was named Conference Coach of the Year and a CMU Champions of Character Coach while leading the men's golf team to a Conference Championship and a NAIA National Tournament bid in 2022. Simply put, Coach Main is a winner. More importantly, he took care of his players and helped guide them to their full potential on and off the course/field. We wish Coach Main continued success with his new journey."
Main came to CMU as a graduate assistant with the women's soccer team in 2017, where he helped guide the program to a regular season conference championship in 2017, and a sweep of the regular season and tournament titles in 2019. In addition, the women secured back-to-back berths into the NAIA National Tournament.
He then transitioned to a coaching role, helping to revitalize the men's and women's golf program beginning in the fall of 2020.
Main led both programs to new heights as the men captured the Heart Conference Tournament Championship in 2022. Main was tabbed as the Heart Coach of the Year, Matias Baccola Player of the Year, and Tomas Lopez Mazzalay Newcomer of the Year. The Eagle men clinched a spot as a team in the national tournament for just the second time in school history.
Under Main's guidance, the women finished third at the Heart Championship in 2022, and Cassandra Contreras was named the Heart Golfer of the Year in back-to-back seasons. She also clinched a spot in the 2021 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships in Oklahoma City.
