Fayette, Mo. – The Central Methodist University women's cross country team ran in their second meet of the season Saturday, at home in the Gary Stoner Invitational at the Fayette Golf Course. The Eagles finished in second place as a team.
"We got off to a pretty slow start in the race," said CMU Director of Cross Country Mark Nelson. "I challenged the team to get out and keep up with Benedictine. We weren't able to accomplish that, but we did race well in the second half of the race and came back and I was proud of that."
Overall as a team, Central Methodist placed in second behind Benedictine College. Lincoln University finished in third place. Allyson Ng (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) led the Eagles on Saturday, finishing in sixth place individually, with a time of 21 minutes. Sarah Kurpjuweit, Veronica Hancock (JR/Bolivar, Mo.), Alyssa Thomas (SO/Knob Noster, Mo.), and Megan Greener (SR/Kansas City, Mo.) finished in 10th through 13th place respectively. Rounding out the Top-20 for CMU, was Shannon Feurt (JR/Garden City, Mo.) in 17th place, and Abby Cross in 18th place.
Saturday's race was a season long for Central Methodist, as it was a 5k run. The course was very damp Saturday morning, following heavy overnight storms and rain from Friday evening into early Saturday morning.
The Eagles return to competition next Saturday, when they travel south to Joplin, Missouri for the Southern Stampede.
