Baldwin City, Kan. - The No. 10 Central Methodist Softball program concluded regular season play with a doubleheader split against Baker University Friday evening in Baldwin City, Kansas.
Central lost to the Wildcats in game one, 6-0, but bounced back in game two with a 7-0 shutout.
With the results of Friday's games, CMU has clinched the outright Heart Regular Season Championship for the fourth consecutive year. CMU enters postseason play with a 37-7 overall record and a 21-3 mark in conference play. It marks the fourth time in conference history that a team has won at least four straight regular-season championships.
Central was the last team to accomplish this feat, winning six straight from 2011 to 2016.
The Eagles could only produce three hits, one for extra bases, in the first game against the Wildcats. Baker did most of its damage in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on five hits.
BU added two more insurance runs in the fifth to come away with a 6-0 shutout win.
Haley Cotter started in the circle, pitching six innings and giving up just one earned run. Baker capitalized on two Eagle defensive errors to score five unearned runs.
Central responded in game two, plating runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles' big inning came in the fourth, as Central plated five runs on four hits. Daly Garland, Joely Crider, Elizabeth Palumbo, and Lauren Hill each drove in runners in the inning.
Maddie Holly and Sami Picha picked up three hits in four trips to the plate, each driving in a run. Picha also finished the day with a pair of doubles.
Veronica Dearth had another solid outing for Central, as the sophomore pitched a complete game shutout and allowed just one hit while striking out a career-best nine batters.
Central has now earned the No. 1 seed in the Heart of America Conference Tournament, which will begin Thursday, May 1, at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
