Canton, Mo. / Atlanta, Ga. - The Central Methodist track and field program split its teams this weekend, competing at both the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Wildcat Open hosted by Culver-Stockton College.
At the Georgia Tech Invite, which featured numerous NCAA and NAIA talent from across the country, sophomore sprinter Kailey Johnson finished 10th out of 42 athletes in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.39 seconds. That time was good enough to hit the 'A' standard for the national championship in Gulf Shores.
Keiara-Ashley Cunningham posted a ninth place finish in the 400m hurdles, running a national qualifying 'A' standard in 1:02.83. Johnson placed 11th in the race and hit the 'B' standard in a time of 1:03.41.
Dayana Montenegro ran a collegiate best of 57.46 in the 400m dash in 57.47 seconds.
At the Wildcat Open on Saturday, both the CMU men and women took home the team titles, as the women scored 130 total points while the men tallied 116 points.
Senior Jada Gaines won the 100m dash with a time of 12.07 seconds, while fellow teammate Carter Hawkins placed second in the event with a time of 12.18 seconds.
Central also swept the 200m dash, led by Carter Hawkins, who won the event with a time of 26.16, followed by Gaines (26.39), and Sakoya Johnson (27.17). Caroline Weatherford just finished off the podium in fourth with a time of 27.46.
Sakoya Johnson also placed first in the 400m dash in a time of 1:02.45. Madeline Wieseman won the 800m run and in a time of 2:31.25, while fellow teammate Isabella Ross ran a time of 2:40.62 to place third.
Sadie Heisner finished third in the 100m hurdles in 15.19 seconds and, in the pole vault, won the event with a mark of 3.35 meters. Hawkins earned a second-place finish with a vault of 3.20 meters.
Renee Finke hit a mark of 1.50 meters in the high jump to place third. The Eagles swept the long jump, as Kaitlyn Weber placed first with a jump of 5.23 meters followed by Sarah Johnson (5.22 meters) and Gaines (4.88 meters). CMU also completed a podium sweep of the triple jump, as Weber won the event with a mark of 11.15 meters. Heiser (11.00 meters), and Sarah Johnson (10.81 meters) rounded out the podium finishes for CMU.
Calyssa Plymell won the javelin with a final mark of 36.93 meters.
On the men's side of the Wildcat Open, Mohammed Nyaoga posted a third place finish in the 400m dash in 51.86 seconds. Sophomore distance runner Jack Schiffhauer finished third in the 800m run with a time of 2:02.96. Senior Shawn Kiptoo posted a second place in the 5000m run in 16:25.58.
Brennan Moots posted a second place standing in the 110m hurdles in 14.80 seconds, while Alexander Ayala won the 400m hurdle finals in a time of 54.89 seconds. Teammate Reise Way finished third with a time of 56.50 seconds.
The 4x400m relay team of Adam Trachsel, Schiffhauer, Ayala, and Nyaoga landed on the podium with a third-place finish in 3:25.75. Jonathan Brown won the high jump, hitting the national qualifying 'B' standard with a mark of 2.05 meters. Brown also won the long jump with a mark of 6.63 meters, followed by Joseph Slattery in second with a mark of 6.44 meters.
Parker Yager won the pole vault with a mark of 4.11 meters, and Central swept the podium in the triple jump finals. Slattery placed first in the jumps with a mark of 12.78 meters, followed by Kaleb Small (12.27 meters) and Kaleb Bramman (11.54 meters).
Senior thrower Taylor Bottomley placed second in the men's shot put out of 18 competitors with a throw of 15.80 meters. In addition, Bottomley won the discus finals with a mark of 52.02 meters, while fellow teammater Colder Evans placed third with a toss of 45.92 meters.
Way posted a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 47.42 meters.
The Eagles will turn their attention to the postseason, as they will next compete in the Heart Outdoor Conference Championships hosted by William Penn University beginning Friday, May 6 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
