Fayette, Mo. - The No. 1 seeded Central Methodist men's soccer team started postseason play with a 1-0 victory over No. 8 Baker in the Heart Tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon at Davis Field.
With the win, the Eagles advance to the conference semifinals for the fifth-straight year, while the Wildcats conclude their season with a 9-9-1 record.
Both sides remained scoreless for the first 29 minutes of action, before Heart Conference Player of the Year Alessandro Salvadego tallied his 18th goal of the season off the assist from Marcos German in the 30th minute. Central would enter the halftime break with a 1-0 lead, as both sides were nearly even in shots taken, with nine to the Eagles and seven to Baker.
CMU's offense garnered much of the possession in the second, half as they outshot BU 16-5. Central would hold Baker out of the net through the duration of the second half, going on to earn the 1-0 shutout victory.
Overall, Central tallied 25 total shots compared to just 12 for the Wildcats. Salvadego led the offense with five shots taken including the lone goal of the match. German and Theo Klein each tallied four shots with three coming on frame for German and two for Klein.
Stefano Campisi also recorded three total shots with two coming on goal.
First Team All-Conference goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo played every minute in between the posts for CMU, recording a season-high seven saves in the shut out victory.
Central will next host No. 4 seeded Grand View in the tournament semifinals Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 4:00 p.m. at Davis Field. CMU won the regular season match up by a final score of 4-1 back on Oct. 13 in Fayette.
