Springfield, Mo. - The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team recorded its sixth straight shut out to open the 2021 season, claiming victory over Evangel by a score of 8-0 Wednesday night in Springfield, Mo.
With the win, Central improves to 6-0 and a perfect 3-0 in conference play, while the Valor fall to 0-7 and 0-3 in the Heart.
The CMU offense finished the evening with 33 total shots including 23 on goal, compared to just five shots and three on goal for Valor.
Both sides remained scoreless until the 22nd minute of the first half, when Marcos German found Alessandro Salvadego for the score. Less than two minutes later, Salvadego found the back of the net once again unassisted, giving CMU a 2-0 lead.
Central would push its lead to 3-0 before the end of the first half, as German scored his fourth goal of 2021 off an assist from Jayton Johnson.
CMU's offense would not score again until the 65th minute, when Cole Hutson scored unassisted for his second goal of the year. Basil Erne and Jayton Johnson scored in the 72nd and 85th minute of play, both their first goals of 2021.
Riccardo Sandulli and Billy Nzojyibwami put the finishing touches on the match in the closing minutes, pushing Central's lead to 8-0, which proved to be the final score.
Reigning Heart Offensive Player of the Week Salvadego picked up his seventh and eighth goals of 2021, leading the team with three shots on goal. Sandulli also recorded a match-high three shots with a goal scored, while Jayton Johnson, Victor Luengo, Jeremiah Johnson, and German all picked up an assist.
CMU concludes its three-match road trip against (RV) William Penn Saturday, Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
