Fayette, Mo. - The No. 1 seeded Central Methodist men's soccer team opened Heart Tournament action with a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Mount Mercy Saturday night at Davis Field.
With the win, Central improves its overall record to 17-1, while the Mustangs finish the season with a 5-7-2 mark.
CMU jumped out front quickly in the opening minutes of the game, as Theo Klein found the back of the net on the assist from Alessandro Salvadego in the seventh minute of play.
The Eagles would enter halftime with a 1-0 lead and held the advantage for the next 70 minutes of game time. Clayton Duarte added CMU's second goal in the 77th minute from Marcos German.
German collected the third and final goal of the evening on a penalty kick in the closing minutes to give Central a convincing 3-0 victory.
The Eagles finished the match with 22 shots including 11 on goal. Duarte led the pack with five shots and two on goal. The trio of Carlos Scheckermann, German, and Klein each recorded three shots.
CMU's defense held the Mustangs to nine shots and six on goal for the duration of the match. Freshman goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo picked up the win, playing 64 minutes with three saves. Bosco Pery played the final 26 minutes in goal, also picking up three saves.
Central will next host No. 4 seeded William Penn Wednesday, April 14 at 6:00 p.m. at Davis Field in the Heart semifinals.
