Kansas City, Mo. – The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team knocked of its second NCAA Division I opponent this season this season, defeating the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 1-0, Friday night in Kansas City, Mo.
With the win, the Eagles move to 14-1 while the Roos fall to 2-4-1.
Central started the game with a very high pace and controlled the first 45 minutes. Despite creating many opportunities, CMU wasn't able to put the ball in the back of the net, finishing the half with 10 shots with four being on goal. The Roos were only able to record one shot.
In the second half, UMKC amped up the pace and tried to match the Eagles' intensity. With a little less than 27 minutes left in regulation, Jayton Johnson put a ball in the box from a throw in and Niels Zachriat fired it past the keeper to give CMU a 1-0 lead. Both teams had additional opportunities to score, but the evening ended in a 1-0 victory for Central.
Billy Nzojyibwami led the team with four shots with two being on goal. Tom Irion took three shots with one being on target, while Zachriat had two shots, both coming on goal including the game winner. Carlos Scheckermann and Christian Sanchez also added two shots a piece. Jayton Johnson ended the match with one assist.
Stefano Camerlengo played a full 90 minutes and recorded three saves. As a team, the Eagles finished with 16 shots and half of those being on target while the Roos finished with eight shots with three being on goal.
Central will be back in action in what is the game of the season, squaring off against No. 2 nationally ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. in Bartlesville, Okla.
