Fayette, Mo. – The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team clinched its third consecutive regular-season conference championship, defeating Park University by a score of 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Davis Field.
The Eagles improve their record to a perfect 10-0, while the Pirates fall to 4-5-2.
The start of the game was very balanced and well played by both sides. Central grabbed the lead in the 20th minute of play, as Guzman Pery picked up a ball in the midfield and passed it out wide to Isaac Johnson who then dribbled into the box and fired the ball past the keeper. The score marked the third goal for the freshman this season.
CMU entered halftime leading the Pirates 1-0, finishing with 15 shots and three on goal, compared to only one shot for Park.
The second half was controlled by the Eagles' offense, but the Pirates tied the match in the 82nd minute after foul inside the box gave Park an opportunity for a penalty kick, which was converted. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Tom Irion headed the ball past the keeper on a throw-in from Johnson, giving Central the thrilling 2-1 win.
The Eagles finished the game with a total of 27 shots and five on frame. Johnson led the Eagles with six shots, two on goal, one goal, and one assist. Jayton Johnson was right behind with five shots, and Christian Sanchez and Pery added three each. Stefano Camerlengo played all 90 minutes in between the posts for CMU.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 11 for a matchup against Grand View University at 5:30 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
