CMU rolls past Ravens, 4-0, to open 2020 campaign

CMU rolls past Ravens, 4-0, to open 2020 campaign

Atchison, Kan. – The two-time defending NAIA National Champion Central Methodist men's soccer team stepped back on the field for the first time in 2020, coming away with a convincing 4-0 victory over Benedictine College Wednesday night in Atchison, Kansas.

The Eagles open up the season 1-0 for the third consecutive year, while the Ravens fall to 0-1.

CMU started the game strong on the offensive side of the ball, recording six shots in the first 15 minutes of game action. In the 18th minute of the first half, Mark Csongradi  scored the first goal of the night on a cross from Alessandro Lacerti. The Eagles kept pushing forward and were able to score two more goals just before halftime via Csongradi on a cross to the bottom left corner and Carlos Scheckermann on an inbound toss from Jayton Johnson.

In the second half, Csongradi completed the hat trick with a goal on a free ball inside the box at the 53:00 mark. The Central Methodist defense kept the Ravens out of the net for the entirety of the match, making the final score 4-0. Collectively, CMU recorded 17 total shots with 11 coming on frame, while the defense held Benedictine to just two shots and one on goal.

Sanchez Ortiz led the offense with four total shots and two on goal, while Luengo recorded two shots and one on goal. The trio of Lacerti, Jayton Johnson and Svensson each picked up an assist in tonight's match.

The Eagles will next play Graceland University on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 p.m. at Davis Field.
