Merkel recognized as Heart Pitcher of the Week

Kansas City, Mo. - Central Methodist senior pitcher Nick Merkel was recognized as the Heart Pitcher of the Week by the conference office Monday.

This marks the first conference honor for Merkel this season. The native of Spokane, Wash. tossed a complete game shut out last Friday in Central's 7-0 win over Missouri Baptist. He struck out 10 batters and allowed just five hits and one walk in the victory.

Through five starts this season, Merkel has posted a 4-1 record, compiled a 2.03 earned run average, and averaged 8.6 strikeouts/game.

Merkel and the Eagles are set to host Graceland University in the conference opener Sunday, March 13 at Estes Field.
