Sterlington, La. - The No. 2 Central Methodist baseball team bounced back in their second game of the Cajun Collision, rolling past Cumberland (Tenn.), 13-5 Friday afternoon in Sterlington, La.
With the win, Central improves to 5-1 overall, while the Phoenix fall to 1-7.
Trailing 2-1 entering the Top of the 3rd inning, Central responded with five runs to take a 6-2 lead. CMU added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to stretch their lead to 10-2. Cumberland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth before Central responded in the next half inning with three runs of their own, sealing the 13-5 victory.
Overall, the Eagles' offense strung together 14 hits and drew six walks in the win. Six different players recorded multi-hit games including Bobby Nichols, Tanner Sears, Cole Luedeking, Robbie Merced, Grant Victor, and Victor Plaz.
Merced batted two-for-three with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Plaz recorded a two-RBI single in the fifth inning, while Bobby Nichols recorded a pair of steals for the fifth consecutive game.
Sebastian Escobar earned his second win of the year as Central's starter against the Phoenix. The native of Monteria, Colombia tossed four complete innings and gave up only one earned run on six hits. He also struck out six batters.
Ryan Jeffers came in relief for one and a third innings, followed by Tyler Vicars, who closed the game out against the final five Phoenix batters.
Central will conclude the Cajun Collision with a pair of games against McPherson and Southwestern Christian Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
