FAYETTE, Mo. — The No. 15 Central Methodist baseball team took two games from Baker on Saturday afternoon, moving its record to 20-5 and 9-1 in Heart play.
GAME ONE (6-0 win):
It was an early morning, with first pitch taking place at 10 am, but the Eagles offense was wide awake, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the 1st inning.
Mason Schwellenbach (JR/Saginaw, Mich.) smoked his first of two home runs on the day to give Central Methodist its first two runs. The next two runs came as a result of miscues by Baker, with Sergio Macias (JR/Laredo, Tex.) and Z Westley (JR/Midland, Mich.) crossing the plate.
An Adrian Martinez (JR/Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) RBI single in the 4th inning, and Logan Haring (JR/DeKalb, Ill.)'s fourth home run of the season in the 5th inning, created the final scoring margin.
Peyton Long (JR/Des Moines, Iowa) was spectacular on the mound, getting the complete game shutout while only allowing two hits. He retired 17 straight Wildcats in the middle of the game and recorded 11 strikeouts with no walks. He moved to 6-1 on the season with the win.
GAME TWO (6-4 win):
Westley got the offense going in the 1st inning with a two-run home run that scored Julio Canales (JR/Canovanas, Puerto Rico), who doubled to lead off the game. Westley now has six home runs and 28 RBIs on the season.
Back-to-back doubles from Damian Rodriguez (SR/Laredo, Tex.) and Riley Richarz (SR/Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after one frame. Central Methodist extended that lead in the 3rd inning thanks to a couple dingers.
Schwellenbach hit his team-high seventh home run of the season, while Rodriguez followed suit with a long ball of his own, the fourth time he's gone deep.
Baker picked up a couple runs in the middle of the game, but Schwellenbach's sacrifice fly brought home an insurance run from Austin Bucher (JR/Jackson, Mo.).
On the mound, Schwellenbach picked up the win after allowing two earned runs in five innings. Tyler Robbins (JR/Bay City, Mich.) picked up the save and Cody Malan (JR/Springfield, Mo.) pitched 3.1 innings of strong relief.
UP NEXT:
The Eagles will be back on Estes Field for a double-header with Harris-Stowe State on Tuesday at 4 pm.
