LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.
– The powerful Central Methodist University offense couldn't get jumpstarted Monday afternoon in the NAIA Baseball Lawrenceville (Ga.) Opening Round, as the No. 3-seed Eagles managed just two hits in a 3-0 setback to No. 2 Webber International (Fla.) here at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

Central Methodist (42-16) fell behind 1-0 in the opening frame and trailed 3-0 after three innings. But despite a strong pitching performance from Dariel Checo (SO/New York, NY), the Eagles stumbled and will hope to get the offense straightened out on Tuesday. Webber International, making its first Opening Round appearance, improved to 39-15.

The Warriors advance to the second round and will battle No. 4 The Master's (37-21), which upset No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett, 4-3, in Monday's late game at 2 p.m. CST. The Master's won its opening game, 8-4, over No. 5 LSU-Shreveport (38-20), sending the Pilots to the elimination game against CMU at 10 a.m. CST on Tuesday.

Central Methodist now finds itself having to win two games on Tuesday to advance to the championship round. If the Eagles can top LSU-Shreveport, they would play a second-elimination game at 6 p.m. CST to get to the finals.

Checo (8-2) (pictured at left) lost for only the second time this season on the hill. He went the distance for the Eagles, allowing three runs on eight scattered hits, while fanning three and walking only two.

Juan Terron (10-2) picked up the win for Webber. In nine frames he gave up just two hits, while walking none and striking out 10.

The CMU offense was unable to find its rhythm against Webber International, finishing the game with only a double and a single. Brandon Alcala (JR/Alameda, Calif.) doubled to finish the game 1-for-3. Fernando Villegas (JR/Hutchinson, Minn.) added a single, finishing 1-for-3.

Matt Piatt led the Warriors at the plate, posting a 3-for-4 game. He also drove in a pair of runs. Manny Rodriguez posted a 1-for-3 game, scoring a pair of runs. Sjaghbar Martis, Marcus Begg, Mark Martinez and Matt Saliba each added singles.

Webber pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the first inning on a run and an error. Rodriguez walked and later stole second. He moved to third base on a long fly out to right field that was caught in foul territory and crossed the plate on a single to left-center by Piatt.

The Warriors were able to score twice in the third on a pair of singles and a walk and suddenly the Eagles found themselves trailing 3-0.

Logan Haring (FR/DeKalb, Ill.) made it to third base for CMU in the top of the fifth, but was left standing when the third out was called. That was as close as the Eagles would come to scoring on the day.
