FAYETTE, Mo. - In two games Tuesday, Brad Cuyos totaled two homers offensively and three pickoffs and one caught stealing from his catcher's position defensively, leading Central Methodist to a doubleheader sweep of Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) at Estes Field. The Eagles won game one 5-4 (8) and the second affair 12-2. Coach Nate Breland's squad has won three of its last four games.
In game one, Central Methodist (17-14) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with three runs and was helped by two Harris-Stowe State (9-17) errors. The Eagles loaded the bases, and Chance McMullin scored on a wild pitch for the first run. Joba Ferrell scored in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by Hayden McMillon, who reached on a fielding error by Tyler Schatz. Logan Bradley then crossed home on a passed ball for the final run of the frame.
The Hornets tallied four runs in the sixth, taking a one-run lead on a Jonathan Pacheco three-run homer to left. However, Breland's squad answered in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.
Cuyos took Ryan Yates deep to left to knot the game at four, sending it into extra innings. Jake Buhmann led off the home half of the eighth with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Buhmann broke from first on a hit and run, and Brennan Hurley delivered a walkoff single to right.
Five Eagles each had one hit. Cuyos, Bradley and C.J. Regan each walked twice.
Schatz finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Aldo Adamus (1-0) threw two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief for the win with a strikeout. Dustin Dalton made the start but took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings.
Yates (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout and walk in one and one-third innings.
A Bradley RBI double in the fourth inning broke a scoreless contest in game two. Mike D'Eletto followed with an RBI single, and Hurley's two-run single to left in the frame made the score 3-0.
Bradley and Cuyos went yard back-to-back in the fifth to increase the margin to eight. Bradley's two-run homer was followed by Cuyos' solo bomb when he took the first pitch of the game from Jordan Weaks over the left field fence.�
The Eagles tacked on four more runs in the sixth on an Eli Bowers RBI single through the left side, when Cole Ingram and Chance Sugg scored on a fielder's choice and�a Buhmann sacrifice fly.
Harris-Stowe State cracked the scoreboard in the seventh when Stefon Griddine crossed home on a bases-loaded walk and on an Alejandro Infante RBI groundout.
Sugg finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Bradley compiled two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Hurley had two hits and two RBIs. D'Eletto and McMillon each drove in two. Tyler Rusk scored twice. Regan walked twice.
Jalen Miller (2-3) threw six innings of one-hit, shutout ball with eight strikeouts and six walks for the win. He did not allow a hit until the fifth innings with two outs.�
Andrew Hughes (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound, surrendering five earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in three and two-third innings.
Central Methodist travels to Graceland (Iowa) April 3-4 four a four-game series in league play. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. CT.
