OTTAWA, Kan. Central Methodist and Ottawa split a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Eagles won game one 9-5 but lost the nightcap 12-5.
Ottawa (16-16) struck first in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Kaylem Quinn hit a single to left, scoring Cris Roman. That is where the score stayed until the top of the fourth when Central Methodist (15-14) put five runs up on the board to take a four-run lead. The Eagles got on the board with an Aldo Adamus RBI single to center. After loading the bases, Austin Fridley drew a walk to plate Hayden McMillon, giving coach Nate Breland's squad the lead for good. Adamus later scored on a Braves' error, and Chance Sugg delivered a two-out, two-run single to left.
Central Methodist then scored three in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth, taking a 9-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Braves tried to rally. Quinn connected on a three-run homerun, cutting the deficit to five. Nick Deichler then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Josh Reynolds, but Grant Davis preserved the win with two-thirds of an inning of hitless relief.
McMillon was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Adamus and Mike D'Eletto each scored twice. Brad Cuyos drew two walks.
D'Eletto (2-2) earned the win on the mound, going five inning and allowing one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Quinn went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and one run scored.
Pitcher Sebastian Wittliff (1-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs, two earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
Like in game one, the Braves jumped out to an early lead in game two when Zach Ostergard hit a RBI single to right-center.
Central Methodist would answer in the top of the second, taking a 2-1 lead on the Braves after Matt Olsen scored on a fielder's choice and Jake Buhmann scored on a wild throw.
The Braves�would tie the game in the bottom of the third when Alejandro Villegas scored on a fielder's choice.
The Eagles would retake the lead in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs when Cole Ingram scored on a bases-loaded walk and C.J. Regan recorded a RBI single to right. Breland's squad then increased its lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth with a Sugg RBI single to center
However, in the bottom half of the inning the Braves' offense exploded for 10 runs. Quinn, Marshall and Reynolds all hit homeruns for OU. Quinn and Marshall's dingers were three-run shots.
Roman, Ostergard and Quinn had two hits apiece.
Logan�Bausch (1-0) earned the victory, striking out one and allowing just four hits in one and two-third innings out of the bullpen.�
Regan was 3-for-4 with an RBI and double. Brennan Hurley had two hits. Cuyos drew two walks.
Brett Mann (1-1) suffered the defeat on the mound, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in five and one-third innings.
The Eagles host Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) for a doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m. CT.
