Kansas City, Mo. - Central Methodist sophomore grappler Caitlyn Thorne was recognized as the NAIA National Women's Wrestler of the Week by the national office Wednesday.
Thorne becomes the second Eagle to earn recognition at the national level, as Caitlyn Davis was named National Women's Wrestler of the Week on two different occasions (Nov. 23 & Jan. 11).
The native of St. Charles, Mo. had a stellar showing at the Grand View Open last weekend, posting a 4-0 record en-route to a first place finish in her bracket.
Thorne began the tournament with a pair of wins by Tech Fall against the No. 8 and No. 20 nationally ranked wrestlers in the country, Glory Konecny of Southern Oregon and Wayland Baptist's Mia Arceneaux.
She then earned a victory via a 7-4 decision over No. 3 ranked Lita Cruz of Grand View in the semifinals to punch her ticket to the championship match. She won the championship with a 9-1 decision over No. 2 ranked Juliana Diaz of Missouri Baptist.
Thorne and the Eagles will next host William Penn Thursday Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. inside Puckett Field House for the final regular season home dual of the year.
