Columbia, Mo. - The No. 1 Central Methodist Women's Soccer team fell to No. 2 seeded Aquinas in double overtime 2-1 in the Second Round of the NAIA National Championship Saturday evening at Battle HS in Columbia, Mo.
With the defeat, Central sees its season come to an end with a final record of 19-3-1. The Saints improve to 20-2-1 and advance to the Final Site in Orange Beach, Ala.
It was a rematch of an earlier contest between the two sides, with Central claiming the first victory 3-1 back on August, 28 in O'Fallon, Mo.
Aquinas struck first in the 54th minute of play before the Eagles answered with a goal of their own in the 79th minute. Sophomore Marcella Helena found the back of the net for her 17th goal of the season with the assists coming from both Celine Witt and Roneisha Frank.
The match would be deteremined in overtime as both sides remained deadlocked at 1-1. Aquinas scored in the closing moments of the first ovetime to take a 2-1 lead. Central had one overtime remaining to try and force the game into penalty kicks, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Central outshot the Saints 14-12 and both sides were even with six shots on goal apiece. Helena led the offense with six shots and two shots on goal, while senior Laura Riesenbeck recorded three shots and two on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Max De Armas Colombo played all 110 minutes of action between the posts, making four saves.
