Fayette, Mo. - The No. 1 Central Methodist Women's Soccer team defeated No. 4 Cardinal Stritch, 2-0, in the First Round of the NAIA National Tournament Thursday evening in Columbia, Mo.
With the win, Central improves its overall record to 19-2-1 and advances to Saturday's Second Round. The Wolves see their season come to an end with a final record of 16-4-1.
Both of Central's goals came in the first half, beginning in the 28th minute of play. Sophomore Emma Doyle sent a ball over the top of the Cardinal Stritch defense to forward Roneisha Frank.
Frank beat the last defender and dribbled around the Wolves' goalkeeper to an open goal for the score.
The second and final goal of the match came less than nine minutes later, once again started by the play of Doyle. The native of Naperville, Ill. sent a cross into the box which found the feet of Celine Witt. Witt slipped the ball past the keeper in the bottom left corner of the net to seal the match in the first half.
Central finished the match with 13 total shots including eight on goal, while holding Cardinal Stritch to eight shots and four on goal.
Doyle sparked CMU's offense, assisting on both of CMU's goals. Frank led the way with three total shots while Manuela Polachini, and Laura Riesenbeck each recorded two shots.
Max De Armas Colombo secured her seventh win of 2022, making three saves in a full 90 minutes between the posts.
Central will play No. 2 seeded Aquinas in the Second Round Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. With a victory, CMU would advance to the Final Site for the fourth straight season.
