St. Louis, Mo. - The No. 3 Central Methodist women's soccer program bounced back with a convincing 3-1 victory over No. 9 Aquinas Sunday afternoon at Rush Soccer Complex in St. Louis.
Central improves its overall record to 3-1 while Aquinas falls to 1-2 on the early season.
Sandra Jakobsen started the scoring early for Central with a goal in just the 19th minute of play. Leading 1-0 coming out of the halftime break, the Eagles struck early, as Marcella Helena scored less than three minutes into the second.
Helena added the finishing touches to the match just seven minutes later with her second goal of the match. Aquinas broke through in the 63rd minute to cut the lead to 3-1. That would prove to be the final, as CMU earned their first Top-10 victory of 2022.
Central's offense controlled the pace of play, firing off 17 shots with 10 coming on goal. The Saints finished the afternoon with eight shots, and five coming on frame.
Helena, Jakobsen, and Laura Riesenbeck each recorded three shots, including two on goal for Jakobsen and Riesenback. All three of Helena's shots were on frame, including two that found the back of the net.
In addition, Kaia Randklev, Roneisha Frank, and Celine Witt all tallied two shots.
Judit Gonzalez Oliveras earned her second win of the season in between the posts, picking up four saves in 90 minutes of action.
Central returns home to host William Woods University Wednesday, August 31 at 5:00 p.m. at Davis Field. The Eagles won last year's matchup by the final score of 4-0 in Fulton, Mo.
