Marion, Ind. – The No. 1 seeded Central Methodist women's soccer team defeated No. 4 College of Idaho 2-0 in the first game of the NAIA Opening Round Thursday afternoon in Marion, Ind.
The Eagles improve to 19-3 while the Yotes conclude their season with an 8-4-2 record overall.
Central started fast and in less than 10 minutes of game action grabbed a 1-0 lead. Kitti Torok put a ball into the box which landed in front of senior forward Anika Kallash, who then fired the ball past the keeper, scoring her 27th goal of the year. After the goal, Central maintained possession of the ball, and despite Yotes having a few opportunities to tie the game, remained scoreless.
Before going into halftime CMU added another goal, as Sara Cobollo took a long shot that hit the crossbar which fell back into the box. Kallash was waiting and added her second goal in the 31st minute. Central outshot the Yotes 5-4 in the first half.
In the second half, C of I tried to keep pace with CMU, but Central held the Yotes to just one shot in the period. Neither team added to the scoresheet and the Eagles earned their 19th victory of the season, moving on to the final game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
Central finished the game with seven shots with three being on goal. Kallash led the team with three shots with two finding the back of the net. Alicia Zamora, Sandra Jakobsen, Andrea Villar and Nely Martinez each added a shot. Cobollo and Torok finished the game with one assist apiece.
Sheila Sanchez played 90 minutes in goal a recorded two saves to earn her 19th win of the year.
The Eagles will face off against No.2 seed Indiana Wesleyan Saturday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m., with the winner moving on to the final site of the NAIA National Championship in Foley, Ala.
