O'Fallon, Mo. – The No. 11 Central Methodist women's soccer team took down No. 3 Marian University by a score of 2-1 Friday evening in O'Fallon, Mo.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 14-3 overall while the Knights fall to 18-2 overall, as Central hands Marian only their second loss of the 2020 campaign.
The Eagles started the match with a lot of intensity, resulting in a quick first strike. The first goal of the evening came in the third minute after Sandra Jakobsen was fouled inside the box and Andrea Villar converted on a penalty kick. Central extended their lead 20 minutes later after Kitti Torok crossed a ball over the defense, finding Zoe Jessen alone to fire the ball past the keeper. CMU controlled the rest of the first half, holding the Knights to only two shots during the first 45 minutes.
Both teams kept a very high pace in the second half, and Marian trimmed the Eagles' lead to 2-1 in the 64th minute of play. The remainder of the game was played a lot at midfield. Despite an aggressive attack from the Knights in the closing minutes, the Eagles held on to upset Marian, and earn their 14th win of the season.
In a game with only six shots for both teams, Aina Cantero led the Eagles in shots with three and Maria Cervello added one. Villar and Jessen both finished with a goal each, while Torok added an assist.
Sheila Sanchez played a full 90 minutes, allowing one goal and adding two saves, earning her 14th win of the season.
Central returns home for one final regular-season game against No. 13 Grace College on Saturday, March 27 in a time that has yet to be determined.
