Fayette, Mo. - The 2020 Heart of America regular season champions, the Central Methodist women's soccer team, opened up the 2021 spring season with a 14-0 win over Stephens College Tuesday afternoon on Davis Field.
The Eagles improve their record to 11-2 overall while the Stars fall to a 0-2 overall. The 14 goals scored are the most by a CMU team since Sept. 9, 2017 against Hanibal-LaGrange. Seniors on this year's squad, Elly Boothe, Nely Martinez, and Andrea Villar all scored a goal in the victory.
CMU jumped on the lead early in the first half, and with three minutes into the game, Heart Freshman of the Year, Sandra Jakobsen received a ball inside the box from Aina Cantero to score the first goal of the game.
Less than four minutes later, senior Nely Martinez scored to push the lead to 2-0. The third goal for the Eagles came on an own goal by the Stars, followed by a goal started by Martinez, who received the ball out wide and crossed it into Cantero who fired it past the keeper for a 4-0 lead.
In the 13th minute, Martinez scored her second goal of the day after a pass from Zoe Jessen. The 6-0 lead came as Andrea Villar found Cantero for her second goal of the day. With 17 minutes left in the first half, Kitti Torok received a ball on a corner kick and fired it past the keeper making it 7-0 for the Eagles.
Amanda Mantel scored her first career goal to put the Eagles up by eight. Martinez completed a hat trick in the first half, pushing the lead to 9-0.
Before entering halftime, Chyler Hahner got in on the scoring with four minutes remaining in the half off the assist from Elly Boothe.
The Central offense continued to roll in the second half, and in the 55th minute, Jakobsen scored the first goal of the second half after a ball crossed in by Lidia Vicente de Vera, making it 11-0 for the Eagles. Alicia Zamora scored with 24 minutes left in the game after a corner kick from Torok. Martinez closed her count after a beautiful shot from the top of the box making it 13-0. Maria Cervello scored the final goal of the day for the Eagles with a header via a corner kick from Martinez.
The Eagles finished the game with 44 shots with 29 being on frame. Martinez had a career day with four goals and three assists, all of which are career bests. Jakobsen and Cantero scored two goals a piece while Zamora, Cervello, Torok, Hahner, and Mantel each scored one goal. Both Jessen and Boothe had two assists, and Villar, Cantero and Torok had one each.
The Eagles will have their first away game of the season on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. against Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, Mo.
