Marshall, Mo. - After 109 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Aina Cantero, converted on a free-kick from 22-yards out, to give the Central Methodist women's soccer program a 1-0 double-overtime win over Missouri Valley College Wednesday night in Marshall, Mo.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-2 overall in conference play, while MVC falls to 4-3 and 4-3 in Heart action. Tonight's win for Central marks the third-straight victory over the Vikings.
The CMU offense was in control of the match the majority of the evening, recording 12 shots and five coming on goal, compared to just three shots for Missouri Valley. It appeared the match would end in a scoreless draw when senior forward Anika Kallash was fouled just outside the box with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime. Cantero then fired the ball past the Vikings' defensive wall on a free-kick, placing the ball in the top right corner of the net for the game-winner. It marks Cantero's second career goal and the first game-winner in an Eagles' uniform.
Kallash led the offense with five shots and two coming on frame, followed by Sandra Jakobsen and Zoe Jessen who each collected two shots apiece. Sara Cobollo, Cantero and Nely Martinez each recorded a shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Sheila Sanchez picked up her fifth shutout of the year in the victory, starting every minute in goal for Central.
The Eagles return home to host Park University on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 5:00 p.m. at Davis Field. The 2020 senior women's soccer class will be honored prior to the match as part of senior night.
