Baldwin City, Kan. – The Central Methodist University women's soccer team stepped back out on the field for their third game of the season, taking on Baker University Saturday afternoon in Baldwin City, Kan. CMU fell to the Wildcats by a final score of 2-1
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 1-2 overall and in conference play, while Baker improves to 6-1.
The first half was played mostly in the midfield, with both teams maintaining possession of the ball. The Eagles posted two shots with being on goal, while the Wildcats attempted two with one on goal. The first half ended in a scoreless tie between the two teams.
The Eagles started off the second half strong, and just three minutes into the period, Nely Martinez crossed a ball in from a corner which was deflected into the goal by Baker. In the 73rd minute, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1, playing a ball over the defensive line which found Kendall Staley with a clear path to the goal. 10 minutes later, Baker took a 2-1 lead after a ball was played in the box and found Cate Nearmyer for the score.
The Central Methodist offense posted 10 total shots with five coming on goal, compared to five shots for Baker and four coming on frame. Martinez led the offense with three shots and two on goal while Alicia Zamora and Zoe Jessen each recorded two shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sheila Sanchez collected two saves in goal for the Eagles, playing every minute against the Wildcats.
CMU will be back in action Wednesday, October 14th against MidAmerica Nazarene University at 5:00 p.m. at Davis Field.
