Fayette, Mo. - The No. 8 Central Methodist women's soccer team bounced back with a 5-0 win over Graceland University Saturday night at Davis Field.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 overall and in conference play. The Yellowjackets fall to 0-3 and 0-1 in Heart action
The Eagles offense started out strong, posting four shots on goal in the first 25 minutes of action. In the 29th minute, freshman Alicia Zamora played a ball over Graceland's defensive line to senior Anika Kallash, who sipped the ball over the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Central Methodist added to its lead just before halftime as Anika Kallash crossed the ball after a deflection by the keeper, with Nely Martinez putting the shot on frame for her first goal of the year.
The CMU midfield opened the second half with continued possession of the ball, posting 13 shots. In the 70th minute of play, a foul by Graceland inside the box gave the Eagles an opportunity to add it to their lead. Senior midfielder Andrea Villar stepped into the box for the penalty kick and fired the ball into the left corner of the net, giving Central Methodist a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal of the evening once again came from Martinez off the assist from Maria Cervello, who threaded a pass behind Graceland's defense to find Martinez.
Central Methodist capped the night with its fifth goal, as Andrea Villar found Elly Boothe out wide and sent a perfect cross into freshman Alicia Zamora, who headed the ball into the net for her first career goal.
As a defense, the Eagles held the Yellowjackets to just three total shots including two on goal. The CMU offense was outstanding from start to finish, posting 27 shots with 12 coming on goal. Zamora led the team with eight shots including two on frame, highlighted by a goal in the 80th minute and an assist. Both Martinez and Villar recorded five shots, with two goals coming from Martinez and a PK goal from Villar.
