Fulton, Mo. – The Central Methodist University women's soccer team's perfect start to the 2016 season continued on Wednesday evening, following a 3-0 shutout road win at William Woods University. The shutout was the Eagles' fourth out of five matches played.
With the victory, Central Methodist improves to 5-0-0 overall, while William Woods University falls to 1-2-1 with the loss.
"It was a great team effort tonight," said CMU head women's soccer coach Dan Schmidlin. "We controlled the tempo of the game with great possesion. I am very proud of the girls and the improvements of the team in the young season."
The Eagles offense wasted little time Wednesday, striking first in the 7th minute, when Nicki Noreen (SR/Bartlett, Ill.) found Lady Tiriat (SR/Bogota, Columbia) for the game's first goal. That would be the lone goal of the half, and Central would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles responded in similar fashion as the first half; scoring early. This time, it took just 35 seconds for CMU to get back on the scoreboard, when Lady Tiriat and Rachel Topliss (SO/Walsall, England) found Judith Sainz (FR/Pamplona, Spain) for the goal; making it 2-0 CMU. Sainz's goal, was her ninth in her first five games of her collegiate career.
Later in the second half, Tiriat notched her second assist of the night, this time she found Jenna Hellebusch (SR/Washington, Mo.) to make it 3-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashlynn Freeman (FR/Moberly, Mo.) picked up her fifth win of the year, and her fourth shutout of her young career. Freeman finished with two saves in the contest.
CMU will have some time off to rest now, as their next game isn't until next Tuesday September 13th at home to the University of Saint Mary. Tuesday's match is scheduled to start at 5pm, with the men's match to follow at 7:30pm at Davis Field.
