FAYETTE, Mo. - MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) scored an 82nd-minute goal Saturday to upset Central Methodist 3-2 at Davis Field in the Heart of America Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The loss marked the first of the season for the Eagles.
In the fifth minute, Misty Olsen took a pass from Kelli Reid and put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 MidAmerica Nazarene (6-6, 1-0) lead.�
Central Methodist (6-1-3, 0-1) responded by scoring goals in the 19th and 31st minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Jordie Retzlaff, with an assist from Fernanda Ramirez, burried a deflection past Pioneers' netminder Lexi Gochnauer to tie the game. Retzlaff found Nicki Noreen, who scored from 14 yards out to give the Eagles their first advantage of the match.
Steffi Krohn respondedf for the Pioneers in the 42nd minute when she took a pass from Olsen and knocked it home to tie the score.�
The score remained tied until late in the second half when Olsen collected a rebound and found the back of the net for her secodn goal of the match.
The Eagles held an edge in corner kicks, 7-4, despite being outshot 15-13.
Gochnauer (6-4) made five saves.
Eagles goalkeeper Sam Savio (6-1-3) made five saves in 87:42 before playing as an attacking defender in the final 2:18, when she was replaced by Nikki Fleischmann in net.
Central Methodist travels to Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
