Marshall, Mo. - The No. 15 CMU men's wrestling team came up short in a 24–20 defeat to No. 10 Missouri Valley College Thursday night in Marshall, Mo.
The Eagles faced an early deficit after Missouri Valley picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds and a decision at 133. Central responded at 141, as No. 19 Arojae Hart delivered a dominant 19–4 technical fall over Ryker Smith to put the Eagles on the board.
At 149, Missouri Valley's No. 15 Kristofer Arrey earned a 6–0 decision, but CMU answered with strong performances in the middle weights. Drake Jenkins secured a 5–1 decision at 157, followed by a statement win at 165 where No. 16 Kevin Olavarria upset No. 13 Dayton Hill, 7–6.
MVC regained momentum with back-to-back falls at 174 and 184 to swing the score back in the Vikings' favor. CMU responded at 197, as No. 18 Cameron Cornman pinned Emmanuel Ayi-Bonte at 5:22.
In the heavyweight match, No. 17 Garine Gibson capped the night with a commanding 9–0 major decision over Abraham Preston. However, the Eagles ultimately fell short as Missouri Valley held on for the 24–20 win.
Central returns to tournament action at the Missouri Valley Open Saturday, Feb. 7 in Marshall. Wrestling is set to start at 9:00 a.m.
