Men's Wrestling Places Fifth at Heart Championship; Eagles Garner Two Superlative Award Winners

Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Central Methodist Men's Wrestling team posted its highest ever finish at the Heart of America Conference Championships Saturday in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Eagles earned a fifth place standing at the event with 90 total points, just behind host school William Penn who placed fourth with 93 points.

Grand View took home the tournament title for the eighth straight season with 229 points. Missouri Valley finished second (152.5 points), and Baker third (105.5 points).

Altogether, Central had seven wrestlers place in the top four, including four earning podium finishes.

Freshman Colton King placed third in the 125 pound bracket with a 4-1 record. Fellow freshman Jason Shaw finished fourth at 133 pounds as did Mitchell Huber in the 141 pound bracket.

Junior 157-pounder Donald Griffin earned a podium finish with a tournament record of 5-1. Elijah Hynes and Brenden Shelton joined Griffin with third place standings at 197 and 285 pounds respectively.

For their efforts in the tournament, Griffin was named the Heart Newcomer of the Year, while King was tabbed as the Co-Freshman of the Year. It marks the first superlative award winners for the men's wrestling program in school history.

In total, four Eagles earned Heart Third Team All-Conference selections including King (125), Griffin (157), Hynes (197), and Shelton (285).

Altogther, five Eagles have punched their ticket to the NAIA National Championship championship based on their placings in the conference tournament. They are; King (125), Shaw (133), Griffin (157), Hynes (197), and Shelton (285).

It marks the most national qualifiers for the program in its history.

The Eagles will turn their attention to the NAIA National Championships, set to take place Friday, March 3 and Sautrday, March 4 in Wichita, Kan.
