Suarez Penalty Kick Late Secures Upset Win over No. 13 Grand View at Home

Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Men's Soccer program secured its biggest win of the year with a 3-2 victory over No. 13 Grand View University Saturday afternoon at Davis Field.

With the win, Central improves to 7-2-4 and 4-1-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Grand View records it first loss of the year, as the Vikings now stand at 8-1-3 and 4-1-2 in conference action.

Additionally, the Eagles have gone unbeated in seven consecutive matches.

After a scoreless first half, Pelayo Suarez found the first goal of the match in the 58th minute off a deflected save from the keeper. Less than eight minutes later, the Vikings would tie the match with a goal of their own in the 66th minute via a corner kick.

Ilhan Dervisevic answered for the Eagles in the 76th minute. He fired a shot from 20 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net for the Eagles' second goal of the match.

The back-and-forth affair continued, as the Vikings' Braden Schoene tied the match on a set piece, which was assisted by Payton Chapman in the 77th minute.

The game looked to be ending a 2-2 tie, when CMU was fouled inside the goalie box to earn a penalty kick with 2:15 remaining in regulation.

Suarez took the penalty, and missed the first attempt on a goalie deflection. However, Suarez scored on the rebound to give Central a 3-2 win.

Grand View outshot Central, 20-14, and 7-6 in shots on goal.

Suarez led the offense with four total shots, all coming on goal.

Rimon Beyene and Robin Vandewalle each finished the afternoon with two shots.

Niccolo Cabras earned his fifth of the year in between the posts, playing all 90 minutes and recording five saves.

Central heads back out on the road for a match against Graceland University Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa.
