Marshall, Mo. - Adding another chapter to their storied rivalry the No. 3 Central Methodist Men's Soccer program earned a thrilling 2-1 win over No. 4 nationally ranked Missouri Valley College Wednesday night in Marshall, Mo.
The Eagles improve to 4-0-3 and 1-0-2 in conference action. MVC falls to 4-2-1 and 2-1-0 in the Heart. Central also picks up its first conference win of 2022 after opening Heart play with two consecutive draws.
CMU's offense put the Vikings on their heals early, scoring two goals within the first 15 minutes of play. Koen Schimmel opened the scoring for Central in the fifth minute on an Eagles' throw in, with assists from both Stefano Campisi and Tom Irion.
Less than nine minutes later, a throw in by Jayton Johnson found Irion in the box, who then flicked the ball on a header past the keeper to put Central up 2-0.
The Vikings would respond in the 31st minute of play to cut Central's lead to 2-1, which proved to be the halftime score.
CMU's defense was able to hold off numerous Missouri Valley scoring chances in the second half to come away with the one-goal victory.
As a team, Central concluded the evening with a 12 shots, including five on frame, compared to eight shots and three on goal for the Vikings. Beer De Vos came up with two huge saves for Central against three shots on goal, earning his fourth win of 2022.
The Eagles return home to Davis Field to host Graceland University Saturday, Sept 24 at 5:00 p.m.
