Baldwin City, Kan. – The 22nd ranked Central Methodist University men's soccer team scored a goal in the final three minutes of regulation to tie their match at 1-1 with 6th ranked Baker University on Monday evening. The Wildcats answered with a goal just three minutes into the first overtime to steal a 2-1 victory.
With the loss, the 22nd ranked Eagles fall to 11-4-1 overall and 7-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. With the victory, the 6th ranked Wildcats improve to 13-2-2 overall and 9-0-2 in The Heart.
Monday's match was a rescheduled game from back on October 5th. CMU and Baker played the entire first half back on the 5th, but bad weather struck in the second half, which caused the postponement. Monday's match started from the very beginning, with all stats being erased from the minutes played in the October 5th contest.
The first half featured a defensive battle between Baker and CMU on Monday. The Wildcats finally broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute, when Austin Halsey found Blake Levine for the games' first goal. Baker would hold a 1-0 advantage for the next 20 minutes.
The Central offense struck with their backs to the wall and less than three minutes to go in the contest. Junior Kazeem (FR/London, England) fired a shot on goal , on a pass from Connor Blitz (SO/Columbia, Mo.) and snuck it past Wildcats keeper Ryan Emme to tie the game at 1-1.
Following 90 minutes of play and the teams all even at 1-1, the sudden death overtime period would begin. Just three minutes and eight seconds into the overtime, Peyton Brown connected on a pass to Joe Houlihan to give Baker the 2-1 victory.
Central Methodist outshot Baker in the game 13-10, and 4-3 on goal. It was an aggressive match between these two squads, as seven yellow cards were handed out, one red card, and there were a combined 24 fouls.
The road doesn't get any easier for the Eagles, as they will have an off day Tuesday before traveling to Atchison, Kansas on Wednesday to face (RV) Benedictine College. The men are scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, immediately following the women's match.
