Fayette, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men's soccer team picked up their first Heart of America Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday evening, by defeating Avila University 5-1 at Davis Field.
With the victory, Central Methodist improves to 5-2-1 overall, and 1-1 in The Heart. With the loss, Avila falls to 0-6-1 overall and 0-1 in The Heart.
"We played well tonight," said CMU head men's soccer coach Alex Nichols. "We have areas to work on as we move forward, but any win in this conference is always a good win. Now we will prep for a Top-20 Missouri Valley team."
Avila and Central Methodist played a tight game for the first 15 minutes. Neither team would budge, though the CMU Eagles offense continued to attack Avila. In the 19th minute Adrian Gutierrez (SO/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) broke through for the games' first goal, on a pass from Joseph Oswin (FR/Bath, England) to make it 1-0 CMU. Central would then add one more late goal in the 42nd minute from Andres Manuel Chalbaud (SR/Valencia - Estado Carabobo, Ve), to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
CMU put the game away for good early in the second half, striking for three goals in the 55th, 61st. and the 69th minute. Avila would add a late goal in the 88th minute, but Central would claim the 5-1 win.
Starting goalkeeper Cameron Metcalfe (SO/Durham, England) picked up the win, stopping the one shot on goal he faced in the first half of play. Ferran Borras Marques (SO/Alicante, Spain) came into the match in the second half to play goalie for CMU.
The Eagles will now begin a four game roadtrip, beginning with nationally ranked Missouri Valley College. CMU and the Vikings square off this Saturday in Marshall at 7:30pm.
