Fayette, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men's soccer team faced a stiff opponent on Saturday evening at Davis Field, as #25 Hastings College came to Fayette for a non-conference match. The Broncos proved to be too strong for the Eagles, defeating CMU 2-0.
With the loss, Central Methodist falls to 2-1-1 on the season, while 25th ranked Hastings College improves to 3-0-0 on the season.
For the first 30 minutes of Saturday's match, defense was the name of the game. Neither team could get set offensively and never had a true scoring chance. Then in the 31st minute, Daniel Whitehall scored the game's first goal off a deflection, to give Hastings the early 1-0 lead. The score would stand headed into halftime.
In the second half, Whitehall scored his second goal of the match in the 61st minute off a misplayed ball from the Eagles defense. With the goal, Hastings took a commanding 2-0 lead and never looked back.
Both teams finished with eight shots on the evening. CMU goalie Cameron Metcalfe (SO/Durham, England) took his first loss in goal this season, allowing a pair of goals, while recording two saves.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday night, as they travel down to road to Fulton, Missouri to face the William Woods University Owls. The match is scheduled to begin at 5pm, with the Eagles women's match against the Owls to follow.
