Men's Soccer blasts Benedictine-Springfield


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Central Methodist University men's soccer forward Erwin Sanchez, Jr. recorded a hat trick and three assists in an 11-0 rout of Benedictine University-Springfield. The Eagles (11-5-1) outshot the Bulldogs (7-10-1), 33-11.

Thyago Catharino started the onslaught in the sixth minute with his fifth goal of the season. Sanchez, Jr. recorded his first assist of the match when Catharino beat goalkeeper Aaron Krieg. Sanchez, Jr. then recorded his first goal in the 22nd minute before Catharino and Henrique Nazzaro scored back-to-back goals in the span of 23 seconds. Sanchez, Jr. and Catharino had assists on the first and second goals, respectively.

Kendell Campbell rounded out the first-half scoring with an assist from Nazzaro as the visitors led 5-0 at halftime.

Sanchez, Jr., who beat backup goalkeeper Jourdan Greene, opened the second-half scoring in the 49th minute with an assist from Murun Altankhuyag. Ricardo Valsien got in on the scoring in the 68th minute with an assist by Campbell before Aaron Heathman scored his first of two goals in the match in the 75th minute. Valsien had the assist to make the score 8-0.

A Sanchez, Jr. to Altankhuyag connection in the 78th minute gave the Green and Black a 9-0 advantage. An Altankhuyag to Heathman combination 11 minutes later increased the difference to 10 goals. Sanchez, Jr.'s third goal of the match, with an assist by Altankhuyag, came in the 90th minute to conclude a six-goal outburst in the final 45 minutes.

Catharino had two goals and one assist. Heathman tallied two goals. Altankhuyag had one goal and three assists. Campbell, Valsien and Nazzaro tallied one goal and one assist apiece.�

Goalkeepers Corey Schelle (two saves) and German Schacht (six saves) combined for the clean sheet.

Krieg made eight saves in the first 45 minutes of the match. Greene had four saves.
