CMU took the lead in the 22nd minute when sophomore Ricardo Valsien (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Cesar Golfetti (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The Eagles had several more scoring opportunities in the first half, including a shot by Golfetti that hit off the post, but were unable to add to their lead.
In the second half, Valsien got around a Harris-Stowe defender and crossed the ball in front of the goal where freshman Rafael Sabadini (Espirito Santo, Brazil) knocked it in to give CMU a 2-0 lead. Harris-Stowe cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 69th minute, but Central Methodist held off the Hornets' final rally attempts to earn the win.
Central Methodist out-shot Harris-Stowe 17-10, including 11-6 in shots on goal. Junior Corey Schelle (Godfrey, Ill.) played all 90 minutes in goal for CMU, recording five saves.
CMU improved to 6-2 on the season with the win, while Harris-Stowe dropped to 1-8. The Eagles will begin Heart of America Athletic Conference play Sunday when they host NAIA No. 10 Baker University at 5 p.m. at Davis Field.
