Eagles struggle at WWU Invitational

FULTON, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men and women's golf teams made up for Monday's rainout at the Tanglewood Golf Course by playing extra holes on Tuesday in their season opening tournament. It was a tough field and both Eagle teams finished in the lower half of the pack at the William Woods University Spring Invitational.

The Central Methodist men played a 36-hole day. The Eagles finished the opening round in 12th place and finished the 14-team tournament in the same position, posting a 69-over-par 645. William Woods University won the tourney, shooting a 13-under-par 563. Mount Mercy University was a distant second with a 2-under-par 574. Cardinal Stritch University placed third with a 2-over-par 578, Columbia College grabbed fourth with a 580 and John A. Logan College was fifth with a 581.

The CMU women's golf team shot a 402 in an extended-play 18-hole final round. The Eagles finished in sixth place, 44 strokes behind fifth-place Mount Mercy University. William Woods claimed the women's team top finish with a 19-over-par 307. Columbia College was 11 strokes back with a 319, followed by Park University (325) in third, Cardinal Stritch (327) in fourth and Mount Mercy shot a 358.

MEN'S RECAP
After finishing the opening round tied for ninth, William Woods' Jack Clarkson captured medalist honors with 7-under-par 137. She shot a 66 in the final 18 holes of the tournament. Teammate Billy McKenzie was right behind with a 6-under-par 138 and Chad Nitz of Mount Mercy placed third with a 5-under-par 139.

Kyle Sachs (FR/Troy, Mo.) led Central Methodist with a 7-over-par 151 on the day. He shot a 77 in the first 18 holes and improved that to a 74 in the second round. He tied for 37th overall.

CMU's Brandon Ross placed 55th, posting rounds of 80 and 78 to finish with a 158. Ryan Rost (SR/Linn, Mo.) tied for 65th with rounds of 83 and 85 for a 168. Teammate Andrew Wooldridge (SO/Columbia, Mo.) also shot a 168, with rounds of 81 and 87.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Park University's Rachel Hoffman won the individual women's competition with a 3-over-par 75. Cardinal Stritch's Hannah Stradling and William Woods' Fumika Matsumoto and Nikki Callahan all tied for second with a 4-over-par 76.

Hannah Clark (SR/Kansas City, Kan.) led Central Methodist, shooting a 20-over-par 92 to finish in a tie for 29th place. She was 17 strokes out of first and 14 strokes behind a logjam of five players tied for sixth.

CMU's Jamie Gisburne (SR/Arlington, Tex.) placed 36th with a 28-over-par 100, followed by teammate Alex Fjeseth (JR/Nixa, Mo.) who posted a 102. The Eagles' Kaitlyn Rogers (JR/Carl Junction, Mo.) shot a 108 for 39th and Alexis Hagemeyer placed 40th with a 112.

WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR CMU GOLF?
The Central Methodist golf teams will travel to Marshall, Mo. next Monday and Tuesday for the Missouri Valley College Spring Invitational at Indian Hills Golf Course. The squads will then go to Lawrence, Kan. on April 10-11 for the Baker University Invitational.
